Portland Old Time Music Gathering is bringing some of the top performers in modern old-time music to the event in 2026. They’ll be part of a packed weekend of concerts, square dances, workshops, jamming, kids’ programming and much more.

The Portland Old-Time Music Gathering is a grassroots volunteer-run festival that aims to celebrate and enrich the community of traditional old-time Appalachian-style stringband musicians. Old Time Music Gathering is an environment where the music is as meaningful as when musicians gather to swap tunes and play in a friend’s living room or meet to play at a campsite during a summer festival. As such, it is essential to keep the event non-profit and volunteer-run. Whether taking tickets, sweeping the floor, organizing the event, or playing music for a concert, it is all volunteers contributing to make it happen.

Beethoven’s Eroica

BEETHOVEN'S EROICA
Jan. 17-18
A most heart-stirring concert awaits you, portraying vastly different approaches to grief and memory. In the “Eroica,” grief turns into fury, when the original dedicatee, Napoleon, crowns himself emperor and the enraged Beethoven now celebrates only “the memory of a great man.” From two bolts-out-of-the-blue chords to exhilarating finale, the Symphony’s majesty and drama, extraordinary scope, and bold harmonies all proclaim a new era in music. Turning his grief into sorrow, Berg inscribes his heartbreaking Concerto, sensitively performed by our concertmaster, “To the memory of an angel”—a vivacious 18-year-old girl struck down by polio. He paints her portrait in the first movement, and, in the emotional heart of the Concerto, incorporates Bach’s chorale, “It is enough; Lord, if it pleases you/Unshackle me.”.

The set isn’t steady, and neither are the actors as they trip over their lines, set pieces and a murder victim who has a hard time playing dead. In this uproarious comedy, anything that can go wrong, absolutely will… with fantastic flair.
